Draw
Draw turns up in 2 fields: heat treating, shop slang. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Draw in heat treating
Shop word for tempering, as in drawing hardened steel back to a softer, tougher hardness.
Shop term for tempering, from drawing the temper, common with toolmakers, blacksmiths and heat treaters. People draw a part back to a target hardness or draw a blade to a straw color, and many shops call the tempering oven the draw furnace. Outside heat treating the same word means a forming operation, so context tells which one is meant.
"Harden it and draw it back to 58, it's a punch, not a file."
Draw in shop slang
The amount of electrical current, fluid, or material pulled by a system during operation.
This measures the consumption rate of a machine or process while it is actively running. Electricians use it to describe the amperage a motor pulls under load, while fabricators use it for the volume of gas consumed by a welding rig. Knowing the exact draw is necessary to size fuses, supply lines, and backup generators correctly so the system does not trip during peak demand.
"The startup draw on that compressor is tripping the 20-amp breaker every time it cycles on."
