Dead zone

Dead zone turns up in 2 fields: maritime, telecom & it. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Ships & Seafaring

Dead zone in maritime

An area around a vessel where radar or communication signals cannot reach.

A blind spot immediately surrounding a ship where the radar beam overshoots the surface, or where the ship's own superstructure blocks the signal. Small craft hiding in this sector will not appear on the bridge displays, making it a critical hazard during close-quarters maneuvering.

"We lost the pilot boat in the dead zone off the starboard bow."

Telecom, Networking & IT

Dead zone in telecom & it

A geographic area where a wireless network provides no coverage.

A physical location where mobile devices cannot connect to a cellular network because radio signals are blocked, attenuated, or out of range. These areas are often caused by terrain features like mountains, dense foliage, or heavy building materials that obstruct the radio frequency path from the nearest base station.

"The client wants us to install a microcell in the basement because the concrete walls create a massive dead zone."
