Dead air

Dead air turns up in 2 fields: HVAC, telecom & it. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

HVAC & Refrigeration

Dead air in HVAC

An area within a conditioned space where air fails to circulate, causing stagnant or uncomfortable conditions.

A pocket of stagnant air in a room or building caused by poor diffuser placement, blocked returns, or inadequate fan power. Without proper mixing, these zones suffer from temperature stratification, lingering odors, and poor indoor air quality. Technicians identify these spots using smoke pens or thermal anemometers during a test and balance procedure.

"The conference room corner is completely dead air, so we need to adjust the throw on that ceiling diffuser."

Telecom, Networking & IT

Dead air in telecom & it

An unintended period of silence in a radio or television broadcast.

A period during a broadcast where no audio or video signal is transmitted, resulting in complete silence or a blank screen. It is usually caused by equipment failure, operator error, or a dropped feed. Broadcasters consider it a severe fault because listeners often assume the station has gone offline and will tune to another frequency.

"We had ten seconds of dead air when the automation system crashed before the backup tape kicked in."
