Blindside

Blindside turns up in 2 fields: waterproofing, automotive. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Sealants & Waterproofing

Blindside in waterproofing

Waterproofing installed on the shoring or soil face before the wall is poured against it.

Where a building goes up against the property line or a shoring wall, there is no room to reach the outside of the foundation later. Membranes are fixed to the lagging, sheet piles or shotcrete, and concrete is poured directly against them. Pre-applied membranes that bond to fresh concrete are used so water cannot travel between membrane and wall. Every penetration and tie must be detailed before the pour, since nobody sees it again.

"Blindside at the lot line goes up on the lagging Monday, rebar crew can't start till the patches are inspected."

Auto Repair & Cars

Blindside in automotive

The side of a vehicle where the driver has the most restricted visibility.

The blindside is the area around a vehicle, typically on the passenger side, where the driver's line of sight is most severely blocked. In commercial trucks and heavy vehicles, this zone is large enough to hide entire cars. Reversing or turning toward this side requires extreme caution and heavy reliance on mirrors or spotters.

"I hate backing this rig into the loading dock on the blindside, grab a radio and spot me."
