The teraampere (TA) is an SI unit of electrical current representing 10¹² (one trillion) amperes. Currents of this astronomical magnitude do not occur in terrestrial engineering or power grids. Instead, astrophysicists use teraamperes to quantify massive electromagnetic phenomena in space, such as the charged particle currents flowing through galactic jets or the magnetic fields surrounding pulsars.
Heard on the job
The plasma jet from the active galactic nucleus is carrying several teraamperes of current across the void.
