Neap tide

nounStandard termTides

A tide of smaller than average range, occurring near first and last quarter moon when Sun and Moon pull at right angles.

The phase of the fortnightly cycle when the solar tide partly cancels the lunar tide, so highs are lower and lows higher than average. Neaps occur about a week after springs, near the quarter moons. Currents are weaker at neaps, which makes them the preferred window for diving, mooring work and instrument recovery in strong tidal channels.

Heard on the job

Book the divers for neaps, the current through the cut is half what it runs at springs.
