Tuck

nounStandard termTextiles

A stitched fold made in a garment to shape it, shorten it, or add decorative detail.

A permanent fold of fabric stitched continuously along its length. Sewists use tucks to control fullness, alter the fit of a garment, or create textured surface designs like pintucks on a bodice. Unlike a pleat, which is usually only secured at the top, a tuck is sewn down the entire length of the fold.

Heard on the job

I added three tiny pin tucks to the front yoke to give the blouse a vintage look.

Do not mix it up with

  • Pleat: A pleat is pressed and secured only at one or both ends, while a tuck is stitched down its entire length.
