Regain

nounStandard termTextiles

The natural moisture absorption of a textile fiber, expressed as a percentage of its dry weight.

The amount of moisture a completely dry fiber will absorb from the air under standard atmospheric conditions. It dictates how much a yarn will swell or shrink, which directly impacts the calculated width of the warp in the reed. Different fibers have drastically different regain values, making it a critical metric for calculating raw material weight and pricing.

Heard on the job

Wool has a high moisture regain, so expect the fabric to shift significantly in width once it comes off the loom and hits the humid air.
