Blender

nounShop talkTextiles

A subtly patterned fabric that reads as a solid color from a distance.

A fabric printed with a low-contrast, tone-on-tone, or subtle mottled pattern. Quilters use them to provide visual texture and depth without distracting from the main focal prints. Because the pattern is indistinct, blenders easily bridge the gap between busy novelty prints and flat solids.

Heard on the job

The floral print is too loud on its own, so let's break it up with a green blender for the sashing.

Insider tip

Building a stash of blenders in basic colors is often more useful for patchwork than hoarding large-scale novelty prints.
