Out-of-band

adjectiveStandard termTelecom & IT

Communications or signaling that occurs outside the primary data channel or frequency band.

A method of transmitting control signals, management data, or administrative commands on a separate, dedicated channel from the main payload data. In radio frequency, it refers to emissions outside the authorized transmission spectrum. In network management, it means accessing a router or switch through a dedicated console port rather than over the production network.
