An artisan who hand-carves the original steel punches used to manufacture metal type.

A highly skilled historic tradesperson who engraved the master letterforms onto the ends of steel bars. These finished punches were then driven into softer copper to create the matrices, which in turn served as the molds for casting lead type. The precision of the cutter directly determined the clarity and beauty of the resulting printed text.
