Space rule

nounStandard termPrinting

A short, thin metal rule used in letterpress printing to form lines in tabular layouts.

A piece of type-high metal cast with a fine printing edge, cut to the width of standard spacing material. Compositors insert these short rules between columns of figures or text to build continuous horizontal or vertical lines in complex table work.

Heard on the job

Drop a space rule between those columns so the reader's eye tracks straight across the table.
