Portrait

adjectiveStandard termPrinting

A page orientation where the vertical edges are longer than the horizontal edges.

This layout format positions the paper so it is taller than it is wide. It dictates how text and images are imposed on the sheet and how the final piece feeds through the press. Most standard books and magazines are bound along the longer vertical edge in this orientation.

Heard on the job

Check the imposition settings, because the client wants the brochure in portrait but the file is set up wide.

Insider tip

Standard letter and A4 paper sizes are fed into most desktop printers in this taller orientation by default.
