Dry blend

nounStandard termPowder Coating

Powder in which additives such as metallic flake are mixed in loose after milling rather than fused on.

Dry blending tumbles flake, texture agents or flow aids together with finished powder. It is cheap and quick, but the loose components separate by size and charge, so the look drifts as the hopper empties and reclaimed powder skews the mix. Shops spraying dry blends usually run them to waste and keep gun settings, distance and film build identical across the job.

Heard on the job

That silver's a dry blend, so spray it to waste and keep the same guy on the gun all day.
