Nanoscopy

nounStandard termPhotonics

Optical imaging techniques that resolve features smaller than the diffraction limit of light.

A class of super-resolution microscopy methods that bypass traditional diffraction barriers to image structures at the nanoscale. Techniques like STED, PALM, and STORM rely on nonlinear optical responses or single-molecule localization to achieve spatial resolutions down to a few nanometers. It is heavily used in biophotonics and materials science to see fine structures that standard confocal microscopes blur together.

Heard on the job

We need to run these biological samples through the STED system because standard confocal won't give us the nanoscopy resolution required to see the protein clusters.
