Nanophotonics

nounStandard termPhotonics

The study and engineering of light-matter interactions on the nanometer scale.

The branch of optics dealing with the behavior of light on scales much smaller than its wavelength. It involves designing structures like plasmonic antennas, photonic crystals, and metamaterials to confine, guide, and enhance optical fields. Researchers use nanophotonics to build ultra-compact sensors, on-chip optical circuits, and high-efficiency emitters.

Heard on the job

The lab just got a new grant to integrate their nanophotonics waveguides onto a standard silicon chip.
