Field of view

nounStandard termPhotonics

The maximum angular or linear extent of the observable world seen through an optical system.

The observable solid angle or physical area that an optical instrument can capture at a given moment. It is limited by the physical stops within the system and the focal length of the lenses. A wider field of view captures more area but typically sacrifices angular resolution or introduces greater edge aberrations.

The microscope objective has high numerical aperture but the field of view is only a few hundred microns across.
