Angular aperture

nounStandard termPhotonics

The angle subtended by the edge of an optical element as measured from the focal point.

The angular aperture defines the cone of light that a lens or objective can accept or emit. It is measured as the full angle between the outermost rays that pass through the clear aperture and cross at the focus. A larger angle means the system can gather more light and achieve higher resolution, directly driving the numerical aperture of the system.

Heard on the job

We need a larger angular aperture on the collection lens to capture more of the scattered signal.
