Field lens

nounStandard termPhotonics

A lens placed at or near an image plane to redirect peripheral rays into the next optical element.

A positive lens inserted at an intermediate image plane to bend diverging ray bundles back toward the optical axis. It increases the field of view of the system without significantly altering the magnification or the focal length of the primary imaging optics.

Heard on the job

If we add a field lens right at the reticle plane, we stop losing the edge rays and the whole image brightens up.
