Trap

verbShop talkMining

To manually operate a ventilation door in an underground mine.

An older mining practice where a worker would sit by a wooden partition in a mine gallery to open it for passing coal tubs and immediately close it afterward. This ensured that the fresh air current was forced through the active working faces rather than short-circuiting through the haulage tunnels.

Heard on the job

My grandfather started in the pits trapping on the main haulage road when he was just ten.
