An early surveying technique used to align underground workings with surface features. Miners used a miner's dial or magnetic compass to determine where to sink shafts, drive adits, or track the dip and strike of a lode. This ensured that intersecting tunnels met accurately and ventilation shafts connected properly to the workings below.
