Saucisse

nounStandard termMining

A historic type of fuse made from a long cloth or leather tube filled with gunpowder.

An early, primitive blasting fuse consisting of a slender, flexible tube of pitched cloth or leather packed with black powder. Miners and military engineers used it to safely transmit a flame to a main explosive charge placed in a borehole or tunnel. The thick, waterproofed casing helped keep the powder dry in damp underground conditions.

Heard on the job

The powder monkey laid out the saucisse along the drift to ensure we had enough time to clear the blast zone.
