Knobbing

nounStandard termMining

The preliminary process of knocking irregular bumps and projections off a freshly quarried stone.

Quarry workers perform this rough dressing step to shape a raw block of stone before it goes to the masons. Using heavy hammers, they strike off the high points, excess bulk, and sharp protrusions. This reduces the weight for transport and provides a roughly squared block that is easier to position for fine cutting or polishing.
