Spec

nounShop talkMetrology

Shop clipping for a manufacturer's accuracy specification, the published limits an instrument should stay within.

The manufacturer's stated performance limits for an instrument, usually written as ±(percent of reading + percent of range) or ±(ppm + counts), and tied to a time since calibration and a temperature band, such as 24 hours, 90 days or 1 year at 23 ± 5 °C. Labs use a spec as a Type B input, treated as a rectangular limit, when they rely on a standard's published performance rather than its individual certificate history.

Heard on the job

We're relying on the 90-day spec for the calibrator, so it has to stay inside 90 days of its last cal.

Insider tip

Read the footnotes: a spec quoted at Tcal ± 1 °C balloons once the meter sits on a bench at 28 °C.
