Aberrator

nounStandard termLighting

An optical component designed to intentionally introduce distortion into an image or beam.

An aberrator is a specialized optical device or lens element used to simulate specific optical defects, such as spherical aberration or coma. Engineers use it during testing to evaluate how well a system handles degraded light paths, or to calibrate adaptive optics systems that must correct real-world atmospheric distortions.

Heard on the job

We placed an aberrator in the test path to see if the adaptive mirror could successfully correct the wavefront.
