An optical aberration caused by a lens or mirror having different focal lengths in different planes. Instead of converging to a sharp point, light rays form two separate line foci, resulting in a blurred or distorted image. In lighting optics, it can cause uneven beam patterns or stretched projections.

The gobo projection looks smeared at the edges because of severe astigmatism in the cheap objective lens.
