Staddle

nounStandard termForestry

A young tree or sapling intentionally left standing during a timber harvest to grow into future timber.

Foresters select promising young trees to remain untouched during a thinning or selective cut. These trees are spared so they can mature and form the next canopy layer or be harvested in a future rotation. Marking them ensures equipment operators do not accidentally crush or cut them while removing the larger timber.

Make sure you flag every oak staddle with blue ribbon so the skidder operator gives them a wide berth.
