Blown fiber

nounStandard termFiber Optics

Fiber or microcable pushed through small ducts by high-speed compressed air instead of being pulled with a line.

An installation method in which a blowing machine feeds cable into a microduct while compressed air flowing alongside creates drag that carries it forward with very little tension. Runs of 1 to 3 km in one shot are common with microcable, and extra fiber can be blown in later or swapped out without opening the pathway. It depends on clean, continuous, pressure-tested duct.

Heard on the job
