Half-standard

nounStandard termFarming

A grafted tree trained to have a clear trunk of three to four feet before the branching head.

A form of tree training used in orchards and ornamental horticulture where the main stem is kept clear of branches up to a height of roughly 1 to 1.2 meters. This balances ease of harvesting and pruning with keeping the fruit high enough to avoid ground splash and light frost. It is a common format for fruit trees grown on semi-dwarfing rootstocks.
