Garden soil

nounStandard termFarming

A blended growing medium containing topsoil enriched with organic matter and nutrients.

This heavy soil mixture is formulated for use in in-ground beds rather than containers. It typically combines native mineral dirt with compost, aged manure, or sphagnum peat moss to improve moisture retention and soil structure. Because it lacks the perlite or vermiculite found in potting mixes, it will compact severely if used in enclosed pots.

Heard on the job

We need three yards of garden soil delivered to fill the new raised beds behind the greenhouse.

Insider tip

Never use this heavy blend in hanging baskets or small pots, as it will compact, choke out oxygen, and rot the roots.
