CHAdeMO

abbreviationStandard termEnergy

An early direct current fast-charging standard for electric vehicles developed in Japan.

CHAdeMO is a specific protocol and connector design for delivering high-voltage direct current to electric vehicle batteries. It uses a bulky, dedicated plug separate from the vehicle's alternating current port. While it was one of the first fast-charging standards deployed globally, it is gradually being phased out in Western markets in favor of other combined standards.

Heard on the job

The older fleet vehicles only have CHAdeMO ports, so we need to keep at least one legacy charger on site.

Do not mix it up with

  • CCS: CHAdeMO is a DC-only connector that requires a second port for AC charging, whereas CCS integrates both into one plug.
