H-field

nounStandard termElectrotechnology

The magnetic field intensity generated by free electrical currents, independent of the magnetic properties of the surrounding medium.

The H-field, or magnetic field strength, quantifies the driving force of a magnetic field created solely by the flow of external current, typically measured in amperes per meter. Unlike the B-field (magnetic flux density), the H-field ignores the magnetization of the material it passes through. Engineers use it to calculate the magnetomotive force required in transformer cores and motor stators.

Heard on the job

If you increase the turns on the primary coil, the H-field will rise proportionally with the current.
