Widlarize

verbShop talkElectronics

To violently destroy a frustrating or defective electronic component.

To Widlarize a part is to smash it with a hammer or otherwise destroy it beyond recognition out of frustration. The term honors the legendary and eccentric analog IC designer Bob Widlar, who was known to take a hammer to faulty components on his bench to ensure they would never waste another engineer's time.

Heard on the job

That op-amp has been drifting all morning, so I'm going to Widlarize it before it ruins another test run.

Insider tip

Smashing a bad part is not just cathartic; it physically prevents a defective component from accidentally ending up back in the parts bin.
