Space charge

nounStandard termElectronics

A localized accumulation of excess electrical charge in a specific region of a device.

A cloud of uncompensated charge carriers, such as electrons in a vacuum tube or ionized dopants in a semiconductor depletion region. This concentration of charge creates its own electric field, which can repel further carriers and limit the current flow through the device. In diodes, it forms the barrier that prevents reverse current.

The space charge around the cathode is limiting the emission current at this operating voltage.
