Scalar

nounStandard termElectronics

An amplifier or circuit block that multiplies an input signal by a constant numerical factor.

A circuit that scales the amplitude of an input signal by a fixed, constant gain without altering its phase or frequency characteristics. In analog computing and signal processing, a scalar simply multiplies the voltage or current by a specific coefficient. The scaling factor can be greater than one for amplification or less than one for attenuation.

Heard on the job

Route the sensor output through a scalar to map the 0 to 1 volt range up to the 5 volt logic level.
