A prescaler divides a high-frequency input signal by an integer value to produce a lower-frequency output. It allows slower downstream logic, like microcontrollers or standard counters, to process signals from fast sources such as RF oscillators or system clocks. They are heavily used in phase-locked loops and timer peripherals.
Set the timer prescaler to 64 so the microcontroller isn't overwhelmed by the 16 megahertz clock.
