Polarization charge

nounStandard termElectronics

The bound charge that accumulates in a dielectric material when exposed to an electric field.

The macroscopic accumulation of bound electrical charges within or on the surface of a dielectric material caused by the microscopic displacement of electron clouds relative to their nuclei. When an external electric field is applied, the material polarizes, creating an internal electric field that opposes the external one. This phenomenon is the fundamental mechanism that allows capacitors to store electrical energy.

Heard on the job

The high dielectric constant of this ceramic increases the polarization charge, giving us much more capacitance in the same footprint.
