Writing a new binary image file to the flash memory or EEPROM of a microcontroller, motherboard, or embedded system. It usually involves erasing the existing memory blocks and programming new ones via a hardware programmer, JTAG interface, or bootloader. The term comes from the underlying flash memory technology but is used as a verb for any firmware update process.
I'm flashing the new radio firmware right now, so don't unplug the JTAG cable.
Interrupting a device while flashing is the most common way to brick it, rendering it unbootable.
