Eye pattern

nounStandard termElectronics

An oscilloscope display that overlaps multiple digital signal transitions to evaluate signal integrity.

An eye pattern is generated by superimposing thousands of data bits on a single oscilloscope screen, triggered by the data clock. The resulting shape resembles an open human eye. Engineers examine the opening of the eye: a wide, clean opening indicates good signal integrity, while a closed or blurry eye reveals excessive jitter, noise, or intersymbol interference.

Heard on the job

The eye pattern is completely closed on the receive side, so we need to increase the drive strength or add equalization.
