Engineering sample

nounStandard termElectronics

A pre-production microchip provided to hardware developers for testing and motherboard design before mass manufacturing begins.

Foundries and chip designers release these early silicon revisions to trusted partners so they can build compatible motherboards and test system stability. These chips often have open clock multipliers or extra debugging features that retail versions lack, but they may also contain unpatched hardware bugs. They are strictly meant for internal validation and are usually stamped with confidential markings.

Heard on the job

Don't use the engineering sample for the final thermal qualification since its power delivery profile might change in production.

Insider tip

Engineering samples are legally the property of the manufacturer and are technically loaned, which is why buying them on secondary markets often violates non-disclosure agreements.
