Digital predistortion

nounStandard termElectronics

A signal processing technique that intentionally distorts an input signal to cancel out amplifier nonlinearities.

Power amplifiers often introduce distortion when driven near their maximum output to achieve high efficiency. Digital predistortion applies an inverse distortion profile to the baseband signal before it reaches the amplifier. When the pre-distorted signal passes through the nonlinear amplifier, the two effects cancel out, resulting in a clean, linear output.
