Essential mesh

nounStandard termElectronics

A fundamental loop in a circuit diagram that does not enclose any other loops.

In circuit analysis, an essential mesh is a closed path that contains no smaller closed paths within it. Identifying these simple loops is the first step in setting up Kirchhoff's Voltage Law equations for mesh analysis. Solving the equations for each essential mesh yields the individual loop currents, which can then be combined to find the current through any shared component.
