Crossatron

nounStandard termElectronics

A cold-cathode gas-filled tube used as a high-power pulsed modulator switch.

This specialized high-voltage device merges the capabilities of thyratrons and vacuum tubes for pulsed power applications. It uses a crossed electric and magnetic field to initiate and control a gas discharge, allowing it to turn on and off rapidly under heavy loads. Engineers use them in radar transmitters and particle accelerators where solid-state switches cannot handle the extreme voltage spikes.

Heard on the job

The crossatron is failing to quench the arc, so we need to check the grid bias voltage.
