Bridge

nounStandard termElectronics

A circuit topology that measures unknown electrical values by balancing two parallel branches.

A measurement circuit consisting of four components arranged in a diamond shape, with a voltage source applied across one diagonal and a meter across the other. By adjusting known reference components until the meter reads zero, the value of an unknown component in the circuit can be calculated with high precision. The most famous configuration is the Wheatstone bridge used for measuring resistance.

Heard on the job

Hook the thermistor up to the bridge and balance it so we can get an accurate temperature baseline.

Do not mix it up with

  • Bus bridge: A standard bridge measures analog component values, while a bus bridge connects digital data pathways.
