Applying a phosphate coating to iron or steel by immersing it in a dilute phosphoric acid bath. The acid etches the metal and deposits a crystalline layer of zinc or manganese phosphate. It prevents flash rust and gives the metal a micro-rough surface for subsequent coatings to grip.
