Stirrup

nounStandard termConcrete

A closed loop of reinforcing steel tied around main longitudinal bars to resist shear forces.

A bent piece of rebar, typically rectangular or circular, that wraps around the primary tension and compression bars in a concrete beam or column. Stirrups hold the main steel in position during the pour and provide critical resistance against diagonal shear cracking under heavy loads.

Heard on the job

The engineer wants the stirrups spaced at four inches near the column joints and eight inches in the middle of the span.
