Bonfiring

nounStandard termCeramics & Glass

The process of hardening pottery in an open, outdoor fire rather than an enclosed kiln.

A primitive and traditional firing technique where unfired ceramics are baked in an open fire. The wares are stacked together, covered in a mound of combustible materials, and burned. The process reaches low temperatures and often results in uneven heating, leaving distinct black carbon smudges or fire clouds on the surface of the pottery, which is often desired for its rustic aesthetic.

Heard on the job

The bonfiring went well, though a few of the thinner bowls cracked from the sudden temperature spike.
