nounStandard termCeramics & Glass

The highest temperature phase of a glass furnace cycle.

The period when a glass furnace reaches its maximum operating temperature to completely melt the batch materials. During this phase, the intense heat ensures all silica and fluxes dissolve into a homogenous liquid, driving off trapped gases before the temperature is lowered for gathering or working.

Heard on the job

The furnace is still in the found, so we won't be able to gather any glass for at least another two hours.

Insider tip

A poor found leaves seeds (bubbles) and unmelted batch stones in the final glass.
