The topmost layer of a freestanding or parapet wall, typically made of stone, precast concrete, or metal. It projects slightly over the edges of the wall and is sloped or curved to shed rainwater, preventing moisture from seeping down into the porous masonry core and causing freeze-thaw damage.
Heard on the job
Make sure the mortar bed under the stone cope is solid so water doesn't pool on top of the parapet.
Insider tip
A proper cope always includes a drip edge or groove cut into its underside to force water to drop off rather than run back against the wall face.
