Parachute

nounStandard termAviation

A fabric canopy deployed to create aerodynamic drag and slow a falling object.

This aerodynamic decelerator is packed tightly into a deployment bag and released to safely lower crew, cargo, or returning spacecraft through the atmosphere. It relies on the resistance of the air to counteract gravity, reducing terminal velocity to a survivable landing speed. Aerospace applications range from emergency pilot egress systems to the massive main canopies used for capsule splashdowns.

Heard on the job

The drogue deployed nominally, and we have good main parachute inflation.
